Together with the architect Filippo Brunelleschi, the painter Masaccio and sculptor Luca della Robbia, Donatello was one of the 'fathers of the Renaissance'. Coinciding with the first major exhibition in the UK dedicated to the Italian Renaissance sculptor, Moretti Fine Art will be staging its own show: In Donatello's Shadow: at home in the Renaissance, running from 7 to 31 March 2023. This talk is intended to explore the burst of creativity in Renaissance Florence through various art forms. With Luke Syson (Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge), Tommaso Mozzati (University of Perugia) and Laura Llewellyn(The National Gallery, London).
In collaboration London Art Week and co-hosted with The Burlington Magazine, the in-gallery event will be held at Moretti Fine Art. Due to limited space, advanced booking is required (SOLD OUT).
Luke Syson is the fourteenth Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum. From 2012-19, he was Chairman of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, where he led on the complete refurbishment of the British Galleries, a $22m project, planned to open in January 2020. Luke has held curatorial positions at the British Museum, V&A and The National Gallery - where he led the successful campaign to acquire Raphael's Madonna of the Pinks for the nation and curated the highly-acclaimed exhibition, Leonardo da Vinci - Painter at the Court of Milan in 2011.
Tommaso Mozzati graduated in History of Art at the University of Perugia, where he obtained his PhD and now holds a teaching position. He has collaborated on exhibitions at the Bargello Museum, Florence, on Giambologna and Desiderio da Settignano, has contributed to exhibition catalogues on Perugino, Gian Domenico Cerrini and In the light of Apollo. He has also written extensively on Florentine sculpture of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, particularly on Verrocchio, Jacopo Sansovino, Benvenuto Cellini, Baccio Bandinelli and Giambologna.
Laura Llewellyn is Curator of Italian Paintings before 1500 at The National Gallery, London, where she was previously Associate Curator of Renaissance Paintings (2020-2023). Prior to this she was Assistant Curator in the Department of Paintings at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles (2016-2020), where she curated exhibitions on Ercole de' Roberti and Paolo Veneziano. As a doctoral candidate, she held posts at the Galleria Palatina and the Uffizi in Florence and was a visiting lecturer at the Courtauld Institute of Art and the V&A in London. She received her PhD from the Courtauld in 2017. Her forthcoming exhibition Pesellino: A Renaissance Master Revealed opens at the National Gallery in late 2023.
