The appearance of this catalogue coincides with the opening in Florence of a new gallery, specialising in the “Primitives”, that is to say those painters who were active between the thirteenth and fiftheenth century in Italy. The work of these internationally appreciated artists is a source of pride in Italy and particularly so in Florence, where the magnificent example of Giotto was followed by generations of artists whose paintings adorn in the great public and private collections of Europe and America.
